My Father

I looked up, as a child,
into my father's eyes
Grim and dark, light and joyous
Calloused, smart, and wise
It was then that I decided
to be just like that man
in sight and sound and interests,
in every way I can

But as I grew, I grew away
Stopped striving for his likeness
Stopped being tough and big and strong
Stopped wanting that grim kindness
I did not listen to his words
I went down my own way
I turned from those who loved me
Drawing further every day

Then one day I made a point
To look down into his eyes
There they were, concerned for me
Still calloused, smart and wise
It was then that I first realized
I can still be me
But my respect, my trust, and all my love
Are his eternally

Thank you! I'm actually working on a charcoal drawing of this picture for my Mom's Christmas present.

I can't wait to get home and post the picture of my Dad that I took. I'll post in another thread though, this is all yours.

Great work, love that poem too.

That is a wonderful, sweet gesture. Both your parents will love it!

Thanks guys =) I gave the poem to my dad awhile after we got in a huge fight and he almost kicked me out of the house, lol... that's the only time I have ever seen him cry.

That bit of background only makes it better. Very cool.

I know this should probably go in the creative corner forum, but I wanted to post it here. This is a charcoal drawing (done on the computer though) of that picture of my dad. This will be framed for Mom for Christmas, but I think it's gonna be hard for me to wait two months. :p
