Photos hoot in a salt mine...Lighting issues. Please Help!

I have been offered a job working for a salt mine doing some photo shoots for the company. They want me to go down and shoot the different areas of the mine and the workers doing their duties. I'm having trouble with the lighting. I have an external flash. I'm using a Canon 40D and the Canon Speedlite 580EX II. Take a look at the photos attached and tell me what you think would help me to get good clear images besides using a tripod.

Store them on a hosting site, ie: photobucket, and link to it.
