The 7D will accept either EF or EF-S mounts.

    Here's the skinny:

EF-S and EF lenses will mount on APS-C bodies.

Only EF lenses will mount on full frame bodies (5D, 1Ds/1DX, EOS film cameras)

L-Series lenses are the highest optical quality that Canon produces, and are never a bad investment.

There are also "L-Series" (NOT REALLY L LENSES THOUGH) EF-S variants that offer the same focal range and fast aperture, yet are designed for APS-C cameras.

Yes, all L series lenses are EF lenses. There are no L series EF-S lenses, and I don't think there will be.

In short, with a 7D you have the option to mount any lens Canon has made since 1987 (that's when EF was introduced).
