    T4i question and advise

I just purchased the T4i and it should be here Tomorrow or Mon. (excited)
I got the kit with the 18-55 and 75-300 zooms. I am considering ordering the 50mm for 100$,but then I see this new lense the "Shorty Forty"for 200$
that has STM designation. Do I have to have a designated STM lense to take advantage of the new CAF feature or will it work with any lense?
I am a noob so I want versitility here until I figure out what I like to photogragh/film best. Any reason to own both lenses to start? I will probably get another zoom
in the mid range of the two lenses when the pocketbook recovers a little.I will wait for a STM mid range zoom depending on the answers to my questions.

Last question for today...I do alot of hiking and a monopod walking stick looks like a good thing to have.( I already use a collapsable pole anyway) Anybody use one they would recommend?

    Thanks for looking!

To have CAF you do need a STM lens. If you get 40mm STM, you shouldn't care too much about 50mm f/1.8

75-300 is a pretty terrible zoom though. I know you're excited and everything but I am just saying. Don't expect much if you look at 100% crops.

    Can't recommend a monopod, don't use them.

Thanks for the reply! No bubble burst here.I know both lenses are on the bottom end of the lineup but I need something to play with at the start. Do I only need the 40mm to be STM for video or should my mid range zoom be STM too. I guess I need to play around with what I have for a while to answer my question.

What reason made you decide to not get the new kit lens with STM?

They don't have a kit that comes with an STM lense,at least I have not found it yet. My thinking was to get this kit which has some o.k. lenses to cover the angles I figure I will use the least and but higher grade lenses for the mid range.I am sold on the 40mm STM but still undecided on the zoom with STM. I bet there will be more lenses come out soon or I may learn I don't need it.

I think this lens it out, you seem to be able to buy it from Canon... Canon Direct Store- EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM

I'm from Southern Maine. Portland area. Although my girlfriend has family up in Lincoln which is close to Bangor.

For a cheap zoom, you can find the 55-250mm for $150 new all the time. From what I've heard it is better than the 75-300mm.

I agree that if you are getting the 40mm you don't need the 50mm.

I would imagine that the 50 would be better than the 40 for portraits both because of focal length and its faster

I got my camera and kit as was pretty pissed. The majority of the kit was not even Canon and some was complete junk. I went and bought a better tripod today and plan on an even better one later on.
The Vivatar POS would not go completly flat and was too flimsy for the camera. I may use it as a light stand since I am stuck with it now. I bought the 40mm STM and a few lense bags today. I am going to take some pics and wait a while before I decide on the next glass. I did get a descent filter for the 40mm too. The bag that was sold with the "Kit" was about 1/3 the size needed and not Canon. the rest of the stuff was bottom end too. No reference on Vivatar or any other MFG on the ad made me feel taken advantage of.

When you buy a kit - camera, lenses, tripod, remote, memory card, etc. - its usually not going to be all Canon stuff and it's going to, more than likely, be crappy. I bought a kit like that - Nikon though. But it did say in the description what brand everything was and my bag was an actual Nikon bag but everything else was pretty crappy.

I went and replaced the bag and tripod just so i didn't feel bad anymore. I actually bought a diaper bag verses a camera bag and like it alot. It was under 30 bucks and has more pockets. I cut some black and foam bords to lay on the bottom to stiffen it up and I can use them for reflection if needed. I probably would have bought some off brand stuff like the batteries but I just like to be surprised like that.
