What website is acceptable for showing work?

What website is considered An acceptable site for showing your work. I have seen a few threads or post that pretty much look down upon a users Facebook page to show photos. So what isn't frowned upon?

There are many choices. If you want simple and easy, you could try 500PX that caters to Photography and Photographers.
Or if you would rather do your own thing, there is always Wordpress.

Flickr and 500px are the largest social photography sites.

There's also 1X but it's more exclusive and values critique instead of silly cat photos...

Well, I do not frown upon facebook. I do post images on facebook, but not exclusively.

I think, facebook is sometimes frowned upon since many people post only garbage images on there. In particular those wannabe-pros who rely 100% on facebook.

If you post quality images on facebook, you will be safe

.. oh, and get a personal portfolio webpage ...

Facebook compresses the **** out of your uploaded images. It's ok for nonsense image posting but less than ideal for use as a showcase.
Calling me a photographer is like calling Jeffrey Dahmer a chef.

They are your pictures, post them anywhere you want. And to as many sites as you want.

I think the stigma comes from so many people that have no clue about photography, posting to their free FB "wall" and suddenly think they are professionals. Just present yourself and your photos as being at the level you are (dont add a huge water mark and try to look like a pro), post them anywhere you want to and enjoy.

Funny, I am paranoid about people stealing my images. I was told adding a watermark is a good idea. So i have been putting a WM on my favorite photos, not to look pro, but in case. I guess maybe one day if I get published then I won't care about people stealing my stuff. : )

Well, a watermark will NOT stop someone from stealing your pics. If someone wants them there are many ways to remove the watermark. And frankly, do you really think your picture are so amazing that people will want to steal them? If you feel like they are that good, put your name in the bottom corner and small. Big watermarks are distracting, and make you look like you are a wunna-be pro.

Cool thanks for the advice. I have had people rip off music samples from me so I guess the paranoia stems from that
