I know we need another thread on here about Lightroom 5, so here goes. I was watching creativelive.com last night and Jack Davis was on there teaching LR5. Some of the new features in the brushes, graduated filter's were wow moments for me and has made up my mind that an upgrade is a must. Having to wait until pay day to get it but I will have it before the end of the month.

So here is the reason for the thread.

Are you upgrading to LR5 and why?

If you already have, what has become your favorite new feature?

No need to start a bash about the product, if you don't like it select, not upgrading or bacon.

Currently I shoot a Nikon D200, process in Lightroom 3.6, CS3 and CS5, on a mid-2007 iMac 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo with 4GB 667 MHz RAM, running OSX 10.6.8.

I'm planning on doing some upgrades, starting with a Nikon D7100, then moving to upgrade to Lightroom 5 for the video support and camera profiles necessary for the new camera. I'll need to update to OS 10.8, which is what I run on a Macbook Pro. However, on the iMac, I am, I believe, running the very minimum requirements for Lightroom 5, and I'm afraid performance will be severely affected, especially with the size files the D7100 puts out. I want to avoid replacing the iMac if I can.

What are my options here? Can I get by with this current iMac? Should I even bother trying to upgrade to LR5? Are there any work arounds in LR3 to process RAWs from the D7100?

Any and all help is much appreciated!

I saw someone post a 32 bit HDR, so I went to try that out, then while web surfing I find out that ACR (Adobe camera RAW) is supposed to support tif files, and that is how you process these 32 bit HDRs. So I do the Merge HDR pro, save the results in a .tif, then try to open it. No go, opens it in PS as though it were a typical file.

So while researching that issue, I found the following.
- Set the RAW settings to open tif files (done)
- go to PS file handling and have that open tifs in ACR. I have no option for that at all.
- try saving as a PSD, then again as a tif, then open the tif. No luck.
- Right click on a thumbnail in bridge and select open in ACR. Again, I have no option.

Anyone else have these issues? (CS5)

Will editing a photo in the Pro Photo RGB (or Adobe 1998 RGB for that matter) color spaces screw me up? I have standard gamut (sRGB) monitors.

Some people have wide-gamut monitors that are able to show all, or almost all the colors in the Adobe 1998 color space. But even those monitors won't show certain colors that are reputedly visible in the Pro Photo space.

Reputedly again: many, if not most, photos, don't even have these "extended", if you will, colors in them. Apparently, these colors don't appear in the natural world very often. But if you happen to come across some scene that includes these intense colors and you take a digital photo of it: how do you know what your working with if you can't see it?

Suppose you typically edit virtually all your photos intended for viewing--tweaking, at the very least, the exposure, contrast, saturation, vibrance and sharpness, on each one; and often editing more. How do you know what your really doing if your working in a color space that has colors you can't see?

And suppose you want to make a print. How do you know what is going to come out on that print? If your photo has colors your monitor isn't showing you, is that going to make it harder to make a nice print?

==================================
I am using standard gamut monitors (with IPS screens), color calibrated with a Datacolor Spyder 3 with the Elite software. These monitors are rated to be able to reproduce all or almost all the colors in an sRGB colorspace, but no more. Reputedly, there are some colors that are visible to the human eye, that are not visible in the sRGB colorspace, but are in Adobe1998. And there are reputedly even more in the so-called Pro Photo color space. My monitors cannot reproduce these colors.

I currently use Adobe Lightroom 3 for most of my photo-editing, but will likely be upgrading to Lightroom 5 when it comes out soon. I just acquired Photoshop CS6. I use a variety of Topaz plugins, Hugin (for panoramas), and Portrait Professional. I just acquired a Canon Pixma 9000 Mark II printer, but I haven't printed anything yet--either on that, or any other color printer. I have no idea what color space the printer can print in.

***Edit*** I figured it out. Had to go under the camera calibration panel and change the process back to 2012. Didn't realize it was going to make that change for me. Still lost a bunch of adjustment settings, though, during the catalog import...***

I just upgraded to LR5 from LR3, and completed an upgrade to my LR3 catalog, which seems to have gone off without a hitch. However, now when I'm editing photos in the develop module, the "Basics" panel (controlling the exposure, contrast, clarity, ect) has reverted back to the LR3 configuration.

Has anyone else run into this issue? It's strange, too, because when I select a new photo, the LR5 "Basics" panel appears for a moment, then converts back to the LR3 configuration. :grumpy: I know there is something weird going on, because I already had a few imports in LR5 before I upgraded my LR3 catalog, bringing it into LR5, and those imports, that have only ever known LR5, are now doing the same bizarre switcheroo with the "Basics" panel converting back to the LR3 configuration...

I also lost a number of adjustments on those photos that have only ever known LR5. Any thoughts would be helpful.

Here's a quick screenshot of what I'm talking about. It's clearly LR5, but that basics panel is clearly the LR3 configuration, and the photo displayed has only ever been opened in LR5.

I use a 17 inch Lenovo laptop with very good specs, but whatever I tried I could not even come close to great colors of my friend's MacBook Pro. I thought - oh, well this is probably Mac Colors.. It took literally 2 minuts for the Spider to adjust it - and surprise surprise - it looks now identical to MacBook, and probably even better. I should have done it long ago. Probably this little thing saved me two grand.:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

Hi folks,

I'm sorry to be such a 'rara avis' on TPF, but now I'm faced with a dilemma...

I'm in the process of buying a new computer(pc) and I go back and forth between an ASUS with an AMD A10 processor and an ASUS with an i7 processor. As I am using PS CS6 on the new computer, will I see a big difference in the processing speed between these two?

Also, the ASUS with AMD chip has a 2G Radeon HD 7730 graphic card while the ASUS with the Intel 7 chip has a Nvidia GeForce GT635M graphic card. I've heard that the AMD won't handle Adobe Illustrator, which is no bigloss for me right now, I don't use it.

Any thoughts from y'all pros out here will be appreciated. :hail:

Thanks in advance.
