While both are great cameras the Nikon FE is much easier to use manually. In manual exposure mode the A1 just tells you the shutter speed you have set and recommends an f/stop. The FE becomes a "matched needle" system. It indicates the shutter speed you've set and you adjust the f/stop to match that indicator with the exposure meter.

Id go with the fe, nikons seem to hold up better with age, and these cameras are getting old. The shutters in the ae1 are especially prone to malfunction if the camera hasnt been in continuous use.
Ome plus of the canon is that fd lenses are cheaper then nikkors, due to the mount being discontinued.Film is bigger!
