nikon fm10 automatically takes photo
Hi guys. I'm new in this forum and in photography.
Some days ago I bought a Nikon FM10. I bought it because my dad bought a Canon AE-1 like 20 years ago and the man who sold me the Nikon told me that this one doesn't need batteries, besides the lens of the Canon was totally damaged. So I decided to buy that one instead of repairing the Canon AE-1.
The Nikon FM10 I have is not new, and everything is normal. It works fine, except that sometimes when I use the film advance lever to take a new picture, as soon as I release it, it automatically takes a picture.
I removed the lens and it works fine.
The same man who sold me that camera said that he repaired it, but that problem is back, and I read somewhere that it's a common problem in this camera.
Please help me. I don't know if I got swindled.
PD. English is not my first language. I hope you understand what I'm saying.

If the man who sold it to you said it was working properly and it isn't working properly than I would return it for a refund. The man may not have necessarily swindled you -- he may have thought it was working. But, if it's not, he should repair it or accept the return and refund you.

Thanks compur. I'm sending it to repair.
I was also considering buying another camera if this nikon FM10 doesn't work properly, but I don't know about cameras. I would like a manual focus camera that doesn't work with batteries. Besides the FM10, what another camera do you know?Last edited by edu2912; 07-21-2012 at 04:09 PM.

There are lots of them. The Nikon FM and FM2 are mechanical and use batteries only for the meter.

A Pentax K1000 only meters with battery as well As does a Minolta SRT -101.
Easy to find good glass for both for not much money.
But to be honest the battery on these is so cheap and lasts so long there really is no reason not to use it and have a handful in you bags as well....

Return the camera. Replace it with the older "fm". Which you can buy on ebay for $50. The newer fm10 arent built as well.
Film is bigger!

Thanks all !
I'll wait to see if the problem is solved. If it's not, I'll try the Nikon FM2n. I've read some good things about that camera compared to the FM. What do you think about the Nikon FM2n?

Thanks. I'm reading about the cameras you've posted and comparing. I'll wait for the camera to be repaired.
Thank all.

Fixing is morally better than trashing and replacing, but its hard for me to imagine repairing the shutter on a fm10 for less then the camera is worth.

Finally he repaired the camera ..but I have a problem with a lens I bought and humidity, the small curtains of the lens sometimes don't close at taking a picture. looks like they stick because of humidity. I'd like to know where can I put the lens to avoid this, it's now in a styrofoam box I made. How do you guys protect yor lenses against humidity? it's winter in my country and the weather is very cold and humid.
thanks
