    Negative catalogue and indexing systems?

After dabbling in photography for a few years, I finally got into a photo class at the U of Tennessee (Go Vols!). So now I'm going to be shooting rolls and rolls of B+W. My question is: what's a good system for organizing and cataloguing all your film? Obviously if I just keep putting it in a binder I won't be able to find a thing. Maybe a system of looking through contact sheets and be referred to the negs. Or since I do some with computers and programming, use a program or excel to look up rolls by date, subject, etc. How do you guys keep track of all this? Thanks

I put the negs in holders, make contact prints, then put them together in a binder. Seems to work well.

i make contact prints of the clear plastic binder i hold the negatives in. That way, i look at a contact sheet and all i have to do is find the corresponding negative sheet, which when numbered accordingly is easy. contact sheet 1 corresponds to negative holder 1. etc....
