Cat by Post in Snow

Another photo I would like some critique on... A few months ago (that's why there's snow) I took this picture of my cat. I entered it in a snow photo contest in my area, but never ended up getting much feedback or critique. The cat has a shadow across its face, and the picture overall seems a bit dark for my liking. Any suggestions for how I could have improved it?
