Tone Mapping?
I have read a coupleposts here where the person mentions tone mapping without creating an HDR image. I fully understand HDR and do not need advice relating to HDR images what I want to know is how do you tone map an image that is not being processed into an HDR image? What program do you use and what does it do?I understand Tone mapping in relation to creating an HDR image just not tone mapping by itself, in fact I did not know it was a technique.

with Photomatrix you can get an additional program that is only toning mapping that acts as a plug -in with ps. It works as it would with HDR images, but as it is stand alone one can use it with any image.
the colors shift depending on how you move the sliders, etc.

No longer a newbie, moving up!
In simple words
A contrast mask is a tone mapping technique that lightens the dark areas and darkens the light areas.
For PHOTOSHOP, there are actions available at atncentral.
