You should contact him and ask him directly...he just might tell you.
There's no correlation between creativity and equipment ownership. None. Zilch. Nada. Actually, as the artist gets more into his thing, and as he gets more successful, his number of tools tends to go down. He knows what works for him. Expending mental energy on stuff wastes time.

It's mostly the grain and the way it gives a film effect...i've tried with my photos but haven't come near as close as it looks on his...almost grunge like, but not so much.

High ISO, hard light, weird color cast (maybe a little decrease in saturation), deep blacks....
