No longer a newbie, moving up!
I think it is a case of too close yet not close enough. The cropping is a little too close if your dad wants to show the whole flower (1-4). It is too close because I personally think more space around the flower will be better but you will need to open up your aperture to reduce the depth of field so the background hints at the environment that the flowers stands. Otherwise the photos look busy or cluttered.
On the other hand, the flowers are not close enough because if your dad wants to go close, he should go even closer as in focus on the colors and lines of the petals, leaving out the background totally and letting the petals cover the whole picture. You may not necessarily also get the whole flower in to do so. A part of it would be fine.
The water droplets would add interest to the flowers "closer" up
