Zoom Lens Suggestions
What is a suggested zoom lens for Nikon D300s/D800 along the lines of the Nikkor 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 ED VR. I would like a smaller lens to take to baseball games and other outside events, instead of taking my 24-70/70-200.
Thanks...

You already have two of the best zooms you could mount on your camera, anything else is a step down.
The 24-70 and 70-200 combo, although of the highest quality for zoom, is a heavy and cumbersome package. Try adding the 24-120 f/4 to your kit and see how that fits with your 70-300. I've not seen or used the 28-300 but I do have reservations about the image quality with 10x zooms.Nikon Stuff

To be honest with you and frank, I can't see how you can need another lens with the lenses you have already. You already have a 70-300 VR aswell? This should be good enough for the applications your stating and isn't too heavy. The tamron 17-50 2.8 is a lightweight mid range zoom and is perfect to cover the mid range. I don't think you need another lens or am I missing something?

How about the actual NIkon 28-300? Its an FX lens, and pretty decent when shot in good light. I know it's not cheap, but...it performs pretty well. If you want to shoot baseball in good light, the 70-300 f/4.5~5.6 VR might be okay. It's reasonably sharp, and focuses "fairly" well. You could set the Function button on the D800 to "switch to high-speed crop mode", and thus run the 70-300 as a 70-300 and as a narrower-angle lens as well, depending.
