Ok I'm stuck - need some help here guys....

    Hi all.

I'm in a bit of a headache situation regarding a lens, possibly 2 lenses.

    DX camera....
Ok heres the thing. I have a 35mm 1.8, 50mm 1.8, and an old 18-70 non vr kit lens.
My interests are portraits both inside and out, group shots say about 6 people, and general photography.

My 18-70 is ok and wide enough outdoors for groups but I want something decent for group shots indoors without using flash. I also want to get away from standing close to the subject for portraits and feel the 50mm is focally not long enough.

I was looking at the 16-85, 18-200, as an everything lens for both, or a dedicated lens for both = 2 lenses.

I have no strict budget and am willing to splash out on pretty much anything. I am looking to get the D7000 in a weeks time which is pretty good at high ISO which helps in those situations.

One other question: How wide do I need anyway for the group shots? I'm guessing an 18 on a DX is wide enough as it crops in at 24 which I think is wide enough?

If I had an FX camera I would go for the 24-70 to start with but a DX is not that easy to fathom, or I can't anyway lol.

I use a 24mm ultra wide for doing group shots at weddings. It also works well in small rooms.

How wide you need to go depends on how much room you have to shoot indoors. Remember though, even if you get a lens that shoots wide open to use available light, you will have to stop it down to get a group in focus unless they are all lined up an equal distance from the lens.
