Need Help Buying a New Lens.... PLEASE HELP! :)

Hey! I am a amateur photographer deciding on a new lens to get for Christmas, I was looking for a telephoto because it is better (in my amateur opinion) for a more all around use, compared to a macro, which would limit me more. I am currently shooting on a Nikon D5100 with the stock 18-55mm. What do you guys and gals think of this one?

    AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED from Nikon

PS My budget is around that price, if however there is a considerably better lens for around $100 more please let me know! As well, if a cheeper option is better!

    Thanks

    Owen

i think the 70-300mm is a really good lens. i have it on my d5100 and for the price its really good. its an lens more suited for the fx ln because its 70-300, but the build quality is far better then the DX series lens like the kit one. the 55-200 is going to be more like the kit lens, which i feel is kinda cheap... i paid $325 used for my 70-300 vr. maybe a bit more then your looking to spend but in the long run its a great lens for the money. if you want some sample shots i can post some up. or just click the link in my sig, and goto cars, then goto east coast shootout 2011, pretty much all those shots where done with the 70-300 on the d5100

Done deal, order it. You won't get any better for $100 more. It's a kit lens, amd Nikon makes a buttload of them, which keeps the cost down.

I had the 55-200! I loved it when I actually used it! Very sharp (For $150), fast focusing, and lightweight. Highly reccomend it if your looking for a 55-200mm range
