If I've got the money now, to buy the D800 or wait for the D600?
So what do you guys say...this might be a stupid question but before i lay my 3000$ on the table i would like to know what you think...in that price, i can buy almost both the 24-70 and the 70-200 2.8 for my D5100....and now my only lens i can use if i buy the D800 is the 50mm 1.8G that i have already...the D800 is pretty tempting though, i don't know what to choose and I'm confused
...I can't really say that the D5100 is limiting me very much as well...but i have the GAS for a D800 dunno....HELP!

I was the same before upgrading from a D5000. The selling point for me(because I did have a lot of DX glass) was the 800 recognizes DX glass and shoots it at 15 mp. That is just under the D7000. So while I'm acquiring fast FX glass this is great. I must say, once I got the 24-70 2.8, my D800 hasn't seen any DX glass. Get the D800 you won't regret it. Your 50 prime is great on there too.

Gah !
I'm getting kind of tired getting asked to decide for other people what to do !
Isnt it easy ?
- If you think the D600 has everything you ever want for now and you think you dont need the camera right now, wait.
- If you think the D800 is a substantial advantage for you or you think you dont want to wait until october (and possibly a bit longer) to get a D600, get the D800.
- Theres also the option of the D700 which is also a great camera and offered really cheap right now already, if you dont need the insane resolution and newest gimmicks of the D800/D600 but just want a full frame camera of excellent quality. Floats around for 1,300$ or some such right now.
- Theres also the option of the new Tamron 28-70mm f/2.8 VC which, unlike the Nikon equivalent, has image stabilization (especially important for cameras like the D800 with their insane resolution) and costs substantially less, apparently without actually being of really less quality. So that could give you more monetary space to also get the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR soon.Nikon D5100 + AF-S DX Nikkor 35m f/1.8G + AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED

What you should be asking is should I go for the 70-200mm 2.8 or 14-70mm 2.8, with money to spare for the 85mm 1.4
.

actually the d7000 is already getting near to the D700...I don't think it will be a wise buy to get the D700 now..doesn't have 100% viewfinder either like the D7000 and if i upgrade a body i want it to be the best i can find for the money...on the contrary, the D800 is a BIG step up from the D5100

Buy the good glass, take your photography to the level requiring the need for the D800. Glass > Body. 100% If you don't know that you need a new body, buy the glass!!

I just got a D700. Before the D700, I only had my D7000 with glass listed below. I now have both bodies with my D7000 as my backup. Since going through the whole upgrade process, I am MUCH happier that I went with glass first! Ya, now having a D700 is just awesome sweet, but I would still rate glass more important. It's not like the D5100 is a bad or incapable camera.
I just ran into a lady shooting a wedding this past weekend with a D3, 70-300 VR and a Tokina 11-16!!!! I was like SERIOUSLY!!!!!
I would say buy:
24-70 + 70-200
or
D700 + one of the 2 lenses you're interested in.
Unless you have a specific need for the D800, I don't see it being more beneficial. You can always use your D5100 for video if needed.
