    Nikon D5100 Damage, Smell

My Nikon D5100 just fell off of my cheap-ass tripod outside, and the mount on the lens is broken and there was a smell coming from the mount/shutter/pentamirror/sensor area. What should I do?

Get it frepaired. It won't be covered by the warranty. What lens?

What kind of smell? Like something burned? sweet? sour? rancid? The lens mount on the camera body is likely bent out of shape too.

Since it's not a warranty repair, any qualified shop can do the repair - See option #2 on this page - Nikon Service and Repair

That tripod isn't cheap anymore. It just cost you more money.

It was the 18-55mm VR lens. Part of the plastic mount chipped.

The smell is gone, but I can't really describe it well. The lens mount on the camera appears to be fine, as I attached the 55-300mm VR and it shot normal quality pictures.

Hehe, I'll be using my friend's far more sturdy tripod from now on...

Sounds like you were very lucky.

I had an errant soccer ball rip the lens mount screws out of a D90 chassis that had a $1000 Sigma 150-500 mm lens still attached to the lens mount. The lens even held the mount screws right in the mount flange the. Fortunately the lens was OK, but it took 6 weeks and cost me $265 to get the D90 repaired.

Sounds painful... can't imagine it was good for your tripod either.
