Looking to become an Assistant

So I've been shooting for a couple of years now and I'm finally at the point where I would like to make photography my full time career. The problem is, I have no idea how to do that. I have no idea what steps to take and how to make the jump from working my day job to being a photographer full time.

So I was thinking of becoming an assistant. This way I would be able to work in the field that I love so much but also learn a lot from someone who is already a professional.

Anyways.

Does anyone have advice on how to become an assistant? Any advice at all would be extremely helpful.
