    camera insurance

Im not really sure where to post this. Anyways after my divorce I lost my job and only make a quarter of what I used to. I finally got some money after months of saving for a new d7000. I currently live in the highest crime rate per capita city in canada. Dont believe me Canada’s most dangerous cities 2011 – Crime chart - Macleans.ca look where prince george is.
Anyways most the crimes here are burglary and theft. So I would like to get insurance for my camera equipment. How much does it cost you guys.

no idea in canada but it's pretty reasonable here where I live. I would imagine if you live in a high crime rate area that your rates would be high too (since the loss risk is higher).

    Best of luck

I pay 1% of the value - but that's a sweetheart deal from USAA. I think most people pay 1.5 to 2%

most all large ins. companies offer affordable renter's or home-owner's insurance. Just make sure your gear, electronics coverage is high and deductable low.

Yes, if you have any sort of home owners or renter's insurance (it sounds like you should, in P.G.), then your possessions (including camera etc.) are probably covered...but it would be best to call and ask the insurance company. This may actually include your possessions when they aren't actually in your home...so ask about that.

Of course, the issue may be that even if you do have insurance, to keep the payments low, you would likely have a high deductible like $1000-$2000. So if your camera was stolen, it's not worth it make a claim. So what you could then do, is add a rider to the policy, giving you a lower deductible on specific things (like your camera gear). This will obviously cost more, but that's why insurance companies are money printing factories .

If you don't have home/renters insurance, then just call around and ask for quotes on your gear (or your home, including your gear).
There's no correlation between creativity and equipment ownership. None. Zilch. Nada. Actually, as the artist gets more into his thing, and as he gets more successful, his number of tools tends to go down. He knows what works for him. Expending mental energy on stuff wastes time.

I recently added insurance for my camera gear as an add-on to my homeowners/auto policy. Almost all of it new. It's about $10/year per $1000 value.

I know right? Here I was thinking places like vancouver, toronto and montreal were big and dangerous. Turns out pg is the worst. So every time I hear big city people bragging about how they came from the hardest place in vancouver, I just tell them to look up prince george.
Anyways gsgary size does not always deter the extremely desperate crack addict in the park.

I'm not sure how it works in Canada, and every state's policy here in the US can vary. I'm an insurance agent in Texas and here's how it works down here:

Your renters or homeowners policy carries "personal property" so anythig you own, electronics, clothing, furniture, etc falls under that category. The problem lies in the deductible. Most homeowners policies carry a 1% deductible, which means if your house is insured for $200,000. then your deductible is $2,000. Therefore most small claims like stolen property are often taken as a loss because they fall under the deductible. The way around this is for you to "schedule" specific items. This usually requires an appraisal of that item. It's added premium on your homeowners (in this case your parents) but there is no deductible.
Being that you're in your parents home means that your property will also be covered under their policy.
Get your gear appraised and talk to your parents about scheduling it on their policy.
