Taking a photograph of yourself
So, there's this model who claims to be her own photographer. Is the photographer the one behind the camera, or the one who adjusts the settings and edits the photos? Yes, I know she could use a tripod, but her pictures are mainly on the beach so I assume she's not the one taking the photo.

If she didnt press the shutter she didn't take the picture Just my opinion. But if she use some form of remote, timed shutter release my opinion is invalid.

As I see it:
1) Legally, in many countries, whoever takes the photograph (ie presses the shutter button) or who positions a camera and trip wire/beam (ergo that then taking the shot) is the owner of the photograph. They are, ergo, the photographer (though of course contracts can transfer the copyright ownership of the photo even before its taken).
2) Generally photographers hold that whoever frames, composes and takes the photo is the "photographer". Others can come in and do make-up, lighting, posing, etc... but the composer of the frame and the taker of the shot is the Photographer.
From there we get broken down into specific and romances. Romances is the ideal that a photographer is someone with some skill with the equipment, that they know what they are doing and exert an element of style/control over the shot itself - this differs them from button pushers in photography booths who tend to only work with pre-designed poses and compositions. It's a bit of a fine line and has a bit of an elitist vibe to it - plus it can totally fall apart when put under strong assessment.
Specific situations are ones which don't quite fit into any of the pre-designed camps and might be up for debate as to who the photographer "really is" (note this is nearly always a debate on the romance side of photography rather than the legal).
As for the model who is her own photographer - she can pose herself, model herself and even compose a shot and use a remote or timer to take them herself. Ergo its fully possible for her to be her own photographer. Getting really into it one could even use a small laptop or DVD screen to output the liveview from a camera so she can see herself and pose correctly for the camera without having to be behind it.How to get critique on your photography!

She's cheating on you.
Kidding aside, I setup my camera to take interval timed photos so it auto focuses.
It's quite easy.

Set the camera on timer, and away you go.
As long as she has set up the focus correctly it shouldn't be too hard. The results may not be that special though. I mean that's one awkward model shoot if she has to walk back and forth each time, unless she's using a wireless release. Still, the same focal range each time would make it a bit dull in my view.

Thats one of the reasons why I prefered the D5100 over the D3200 or D7000 : thanks to the swivel monitor, I can see what I'm photographing when I photograph myself.
With my G11, I could even show somebody what I'm photographing while I was looking through the viewfinder, sadly with SLRs that doesnt work anymore.Last edited by Solarflare; 06-03-2012 at 08:22 AM.

Well for a laptop you can use a cable connection and the software that game with the camera itself (if you don't have the software CD it should be up for download on the Canon website). I forget the specific software name but the tether software is supplied with the camera CDs.
For the i tech and such you might have to hunt around the app stores - but I'm fairly certain that there will be something made (I'm unsure if there is any "official" software)How to get critique on your photography!

The last time I went to the Canon site, they only provided updates for their apps, not full installs.
Steve5D,
Canon provides software for tethering with their cameras. If you dont have the Application disk that came with your cameras, but would like to have it, let me know. I can provide you with the bits.

Canon U.S.A. : Support & Drivers : EOS 5D
They still have the full software. EOS Utility is the one that does tethering.
They call it an 'updater', but it says it will install the full software, or update an older version.

It's not tough to do self portraits, so there is no reason why a model couldn't shoot her own photos. On the other topic about who owns the rights to a photo. The person that trips the shutter. It really doesn't matter if the camera was set up by someone else. In my experience though the person that sets up the camera will take credit, I disagree with this.
