I'm wondering if, even though its limited access, if someone didn't just know the right person and get a jumpstart into something exclusive. The article mentions that access is "limited" but not exclusive to a single photographer. Could just be someone new getting a big chance to shoot some rare photos which won't be expected to be part of the main thrust, but at least run the chance of.

Mostly, I'm bothered by how these are like those little biographical vignettes played on TV before each American athlete competes in his/her event. These images are sappy and posed and shamelessly over-glorify the yet-to-be glorious. I'd much prefer to see these people in their typical environment doing their ordinary activities. That, to me, would be far more interesting.

The U.S. Olympic C.M.S. only allows a limited number of photographers on an invitation only basis to take pictures of our country’s best athletes.
I'm guessing that Joe Klamar was given a limited space to shoot these as well as a limited time. He may have been experiencing an "off day", but regardless, there is no excuse for these results. The image of Leshawn Merrit, for example, would immediately hit my recycle bin. Well for that matter, I can't really see any of them making it past the first cull.

I would say they have been tampered with when you compare them to these, but he does shoot Nikon so that could explain a lot Joe Klamar - Google Search

Almost all of his good shots are paparazzi style photojournalism or event photography. Like somebody else said, it looks like someone who is not a studio photographer trying to do studio photography for the first time and failing miserably at it.

Even if you're a brilliant photojournalist, that doesn't make you an even average studio photographer. The skills are extremely different.
Sometimes I forget to tell people I like their photos when I do C+C. If I gave you comments, I liked your photo. I don't bother with pictures I don't like at all most of the time.

It's shocking!! I can't believe the background is in view and ripped! Surely they'd at least try to improve them in PP, they can't just release those to the world. Why on earth would the official Olympic team shots be done in such a rushed, hap-hazard way|?

If it's anything like the Canadian Olympic group that is in charge of finding and using good photographers to photograph the athletes, I can understand why the quality of this stuff is so bad. People with no understanding of photography are the ones that are hiring these, generally very well paid pretenders who have managed to kiss the right asses to get hired to produce this embarassing garbage. The worse part is that their are people that truely believe that this is quality work.

All the poses seem extremely unnatural and awkward, I mean I know they aren't models but come on now..

Was reading this in the car on my way to Cincinnati yesterday and thought well I wonder if its a case of photographers being super picky about something most people won't even notice, and then I pulled up the pics. wow. I have never claimed to be great but I'm positive I could get as good if not better results then this and i definatly don't feel i'm ready to take on something like this. I would have trashed all of these photos. It's kind of embarrasing that these saw the light of day.

Right. And it's not just the exposed props and hammy poses. It's missed exposure, horrible lighting, chopped heads and limbs, etc. These photos suck by just about ever measure of photographic competence.

Heck, even I could have done better!

These are terrible, no doubt, but the glitzy images that grace magazines aren't exactly "works of art" either - most can be summed up to having the impact of a technical lighting exercise.
