Home lighting setup

Hi everyone, I'm fairly new to photography and have been using an SLR for about two years now. My husband and I recently had a baby girl so I've gotten a lot of practice using my camera lately. I try to use natural light that comes in through the window to photgraphy her, but I'm interested in setting up a little studio in our basement. I feel that with a little practice I can probably take pictures just as good or better than ones we'd pay for at Sears or JC Penny. I'm not looking for anything fancy or expensive, just something basic to provide more light since we only have a few small windows in our basement. However, I have no clue what I would need for this or how to go about setting this up. Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.
