Question How To Mount A Hoya Infrared Filter To A Canon A650?

How To Mount A Hoya Infrared Filter To A Canon A650?

I purchased a Hoya IR filter (R72, 58mm, pitch 0.75) that is supposed to fit on a Canon A650 -- so said all the literature I read.

I'm a beginner and figured that it would click/snap/screw on, but it does not fit at all. It seems too big for the stock lens that I have.

I have no idea where to go from here so I need help.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance.

    what is your stock lens?

im guessing the 18-55mm? in which case it SHOULD screw in (read the rim of the lens it should say a size other than the size of the focal, that is what size of filter will fit it i.e. my 50mm is a 52mm mount where as my 75-300mm is a 58mm mount

just looked at what the Canon A650 is...
you will never get a 58mm filter onto that, filters are desicled for SLR cameras not compacts

the above link is about the only thing you can do

    We'll Soon See

I called the company at Amazon that offers that adapter linked to earlier in this thread and they said it would allow me to mount my Hoya 58mm IR filter to a Canon A650IS.

I went ahead and ordered it and will report back about how it works.

    Thanks again for the suggestions.

The company that sells the adapter in Amazon is Adorama. If they say it will work, most likely it will work for you.

Once you get the adapter, be sure show us the result with the filter!

I do not know since I do not own the camera.

A plastic lens hood that made by Canon will cost that much (or more). So a plastic adapter like that made by Canon, I will not be surprised if it cost over $20.

    Thumbs up

Yea, the adapter was $21... Reasonable.

I'm getting it to adapt a 58mm Hoya IR filter to my A650IS to do IR timelapse.

I've already done some non-IR timelapse using two methods:

    1. CHDK (Canon A650IS)
    2. GBTimelapse (Canon A520)

Just an update to let you know that the Canon adapter DOES allow the mounting of the 58mm Hoya IR filter to the A650IS. Just pop off the plastic chrome-colored cosmetic ring around the lens, and twist on the adapter (remembering to push the release button both times).

    It works wonderfully.

I've tried doing some IR timelapse but am a little disappointed with the results. It works, but does not capture heat profiles as I was hoping.

I think I'm going to have to look for something specifically made for doing IR photography as the sensor in a consumer camera is just not sensitive enough for picking up heat signatures with a filter.

You can see the light emitted when you press a remote control button though. Still, not enough sensitivity, I think.

If anyone has ideas about equipment for doing real IR photography, I'd love to know about it.

    Thanks.

Here is another timelapse I took with the Canon A650IS using CHDK:
