Correct Exposure? C&C

I just got my copy of Understanding Exposure. It seems like i was just re-reading what i have already read online several times...and im still not sure if im putting it all together right...
Can you tell by looking at this paticular photo if its over, under, or correctly exposed?
Even though its not perfect and nothing special...the colors and tones are probably the closest ive gotten to what they should be (in my opinion).

Exposure looks ok, but if your camera can spot meter you could meter just off the green grass and use that as your exposure. Green grass is very close to 18% gray.

Thats the thing, i have no idea what "to meter" means even though i keep reading everything that tells where to meter at...
Does that mean to point it at a certain area, set the shutter and apreture, and then move it back, focus, and shoot?
I dont know if mine has spot meter or not, ill have to check...dont remember reading it in the manual..but ive read so much i could have possibly forgotten!

And how do i know when to meter off the grass, and when to meter off the sky..cause i read something yesterday about metering off the sky...

Metering off of the grass works well pretty much any time you're shooting outside... I can't say that I've used the sky much, if at all. For landscapes, it would probably be fine.


Take a picture of something after metering on the grass, then take another picture of the same thing after metering the sky.

My guess is that the one metered off of the sky will be about a stop darker.


...Just a guess though. Try it out.
