My Horror Shots
I posted a thread yesterday, http://www.thephotoforum.com/forum/p...setup-c-c.html , showing my setup and wondering if i needed anything more added to it, a few of you commented asking to see the final shots so here are a few of the shots i got, they aren't edited yet - before i edit them i'm wondering what you think needs doing to them?
Thanks xx

The further out ones with the guys on the wall are pretty cool.
The closer ones I dont like, mainly because of the shadows that your flash is causing.

bigtwinky, the hassle i had with shadows! LOL! I didn't use flash and my assistant came up with the conclusion that since this is meant to be set in a basement, shadows would naturally appear from the light being cast through the window / lightbulbs.
Do you think i should edit them out or soften them up? It's my biggest hate about the images, not knowing what to do with them to make it looks realistic.
Nikon, thanks - those shots were gros because the actor on the table kept sayin to the guy ''just push it down as hard as u can, make it look real'' and it was literally imprinting on his tummy. it was great that they both got sucked right into it!The Family Exhibition - Coming in 2012

Soften them. If your intended look is to simulate a window light, the shadows would not be that harsh in real life unless the sun was right outside the window, but then you'd have bigger worries than shadows

Maybe even darken the other areas around the main subject as a window light will rarely light up a room that much.

The first image has some unusual artifacting, you said that you didn't edit these so I doubt it was from over sharpening but I wanted to give you a heads up that your jpeg compression may have been a bit extreme. This is a neat set up and all but there are a few things that bother me, the clean white shirt with smudges on it, the (what appears to be) cloth wood backdrop, and the tools floating in the middle of no where. Lots of potentially good things, just very far from each other. The white shirt could have been run through dirt piles and shredded with a razor to give it more of a used appearance, maybe the tools are laying on the ground with blood dripping off, maybe create a fake blood mixing in some motor oil and coffee grounds to make it chunkier so that the blood on the walls feels like it has some mass.
I guess really I just would expect a horror shot to involve a little more horror, more dramatic shadows, a little fear, some real grunge.
Awesome set up, very big room, lots of possibilities but it looks like you stopped before you really got the ball rolling! I know something this large is difficult to pull off with a small budget, however working with a smaller area you could have made it feel a bit more horrific.
By no means am I saying you did a bad job, I just see you obviously gave this a really good go and I'd really like to see you improve next time.

I would recommend to desaturate the images and darken them a little bit, specially the 1st and last ones.
Good pictures, if you are going to do more on the same theme, try something more low key.

Wow thanks for some great feedback, the wall is polyboard, painted brown and then soaked in water to give it that minging grubby look. The problem with shooting so far from the wall was that you can't see the amount of detail that went into the tools, they're completely rusted and smeared in blood.
You're absolutely right about the shirts, i appreciate the honesty, i cut them using scissors then when the boys turned up i told them to go roll in the mud a bit but they just grabbed clumps of mud n smeared it over eachother lol, it was a surprisingly hard 'look' to achieve because it looked so fake so we just added some blood and i sprayed them with 'sweat' constantly.
I shall post up the final edits and i'll definitely keep shooting stuff like this, i enjoyed it so much and i want to get so much better and wow people!
Einherjar, thanks for your comments, i will defo fiddle with this in editing!
8ball and BuS_RiDeR thanks, everyone's favourite seems to be the hanging shadow, it'll probably be my final. The Family Exhibition - Coming in 2012

Nice, i like this set. I like people that think outside of the box! Its nice to have a couple people work with you on a set to make an idea come to life.
1, Is great. I think the artifacting high contrast look works very well with the scene. Totaly reminds me of "Army of Darkness"!
2, Is my fav by far. I like that fact of using shadows as a main subject and I also like the interaction with the guy on the floor. good job telling a story imo.
3, isnt doing a lot. Maybe because it is so far away and there is a lot going on in a small area. Like mentioned before it might be good to see it closer.
4, is pretty good. Its missing something but dont know what.
Looks like you put a lot of work into this shoot. Bravo!-Bryan
