Gift for my Grandpa...HELP please!
Hello all! My Grandpa's birthday is coming up and he has just come across a big box of his old slides and wants to digitize them, but he keeps talking about some thing his dad used to have that was kind of like the fluorescent light boards that doctors use to put xrays on but you can line the slides up on it and see which ones have a good picture and which ones don't. I'm sure that these days there is a more modern way of doing this, but he is determined to use the old school way and I want to help him, but the only problem is I have no idea what they are called and I have searched all over the internet! If anyone know what I'm talking about please let me know Thank You!!

They're called film/slide scanners. The better they are, the pricier they are. If you've got thousands of slides, it might be worth investing in one. Otherwise, there's lot of places that offer the service.
Here's a link to the (now discontinued) Nikon versions: Click here.
Go forth and actuate!

If he wants to just look at the slides without using a projector, you can get him a slide viewer.

For digitizing, as noted above, he'll have to use either a slide scanner or a flatbed scanner with a slide adapter. Fortunately, slides usually scan better than film negatives.Digital

Yes, he's talking about a light table.
There's no correlation between creativity and equipment ownership. None. Zilch. Nada. Actually, as the artist gets more into his thing, and as he gets more successful, his number of tools tends to go down. He knows what works for him. Expending mental energy on stuff wastes time.
