No caps. No credibility. No help.
Just about any external hot shoe flash will work. Any lens that has a Nikon F-mount will work with your D5100.
Both questions are covered, relative to Nikon products, in your D5100 users manual. The user's manual is a strongly recommend source of accurate information.. . . . . . Keith . . . . . . .How Do I Use My Digital SLR?...

Do you have the manual for the camera? The CD manual? It tells you all the lenses and flashes that are compatible. Most Nikon lenses will work with this camera but only AF-S lenses will autofocus. Some other brands (Sigma, Tokina, etc.) will work as well but if you want them to autofocus check to make sure they are compatible with the D5100. Flashes: sb-900, sb-800, sb-700, sb-600, sb-500, and sb-r200 are all compatible as well as some other brands! Do some research and you will find flashes and lenses that will fit your specific needs.
I have this camera and I personally recommend a prime lens such as af-s50mm f/1.4 or 35mm f/1.8. Prime lenses are fixed focal lengths and are sharper than the cheaper zooms!

The user's manual only tells what Nikon products are compatible, not what Vivitar, Sigma, Nissin, Bower, Yongou, Tokina, Sunpack, Zeikos, Metz, Leica, Rokinon, Tamron, or Zeiss stuff will work.
