Can anybody explain what is the purpose of the following lights? Thanks!

Well, I definitely think if you did a little research you could find what these do. Use Google, or search these forums.

One thing to keep in mind with any light modifiers - given that the light is the same distance from the subject - the bigger the light source, the softer the light.
So an on-camera flash will give a very harsh light, and a softbox (a large to very large piece of white fabric between the light and the subject thus spreading out the "light source") will be much softer. Check out http://www.studiolighting.net/ and http://www.photoflexlightingschool.com/.
