Camera froze up...Why?
I had a session this weekend and while I was shooting my Canon 40D kept freezing up and saying on the screen “ERROR 99” or something to the affect of having to remove the battery and turning the camera on and off. So I did this but it would lock up 4 shots later. EXTREMELY frustrating. I can see why you need a second camera.
Can anyone bring me insight on why my camera is doing this? Has this happened to you? What did you do to fix it?
Thank you!!!

I used the TPF forum search and found a few Err99 threads. matfoster posed a question about it around a week ago or so. The Err issue has been well-known among Canon users for years now. It is a general, non-specific system fault warning. There are other warning numbers. Here are some Err99 links for you.

the only time my 400D locks up is when the Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS L is fitted - never aproblem with my sigma glass
Though that is only when the batteries are close to death in the camera anyway.
From what I hear, most of the time with this problem its the lens and camera not making perfect contact. Take the lens off and try remounting it. If that does not clear it you can try cleaning the contacts (the copper coloured metals points in the lens barrel and on the inside of the lens housing on the camera). The rubber end of a pencil works well for this.
The only other time I had troubles was with the contacts on my battery grip (canon make again) but a bit jiggling and it works perfectly
