Next step up from a rebel kit lens
I've outgrown the kit lens and would like some advice as to what to buy next.
Here's what I'm looking for:
-EF (planning on upgrading my camera body down the road)
-Wide f stop...I shoot a lot of portraits and low light scenes and need/like that shallow depth of field and nice bokeh
Also, down the road I'd like a wide angle lens. Are there any lenses out there that can work for both wide angle and portrait photography with a wide f stop? Or should I get 2 separate dedicated lenses? If not, again, what's a good lens that fits the criteria stated above?
I know I probably can't get exactly what I'm looking for for under $1,000...but any suggestions for lenses that might work for what I'm looking for AND aren't gonna cost a grand or more?
Thanks!

What do you mainly shoot?

The only thing I can think of is the Canon EF f/2.8L USM 24-70, but it's ~$1,300 new. Maybe find one used somewhere?

Thanks for the feedback. It's a bit out of my price range, but I'll definitely look around for a used one. Good call. Thanks for the feedback!

I spend too much of my life on TPF!
Have you looked into a 50mm f/1.4? It wont shoot wide shots, but would work very well for portraits and low light.
