Some people get worried about things getting stolen, I am anxious to replace things it would be like christmas come early.
    If I hit the lotto would not care much either. Maybe would be more sad if I had some nice shots that got stolen with the gear. I'd be carrying a D700, Nikon 14-24 and 70 - 200 zoom. About $7000+.

    If I did not have insurance and lost it, that would be a big hit for me. Most likely would not re-buy it if it was out of my pocket. Would go for used Pentax gear on ebay and plastic barrel lenses to replace it. Could not afford to buy Nikon twice.

    That is the problem. No place to keep the gear secure other than cover it up. I could truck it back and forth to the car, but that is about it.

    They do make cable cage bags to lock the gear to something. but I most likely would just be on the sand with towels where I go.

    I know what you mean.

    what I meant was that I wouldn't tell my agent it was stolen from the beach.

    my hotel room would get robbed. Or I would get mugged. Lol

    btw. You mention beaches and kiteboarding ....... Ever been to kite beach in cabarete?

    My stuff isn't worth that much, so I don't worry about it. My SLR bag is probably worth $1500. I don't take my SLR to the beach, I take a compact. I don't do extreme sports, and if I did, I would again take my compact.

    I did trek around a couple of European cities with my SLR bag. I just carried it cross-shoulder and when I put it down to eat, I looped it around my leg a couple times. My bag, a LowePro, has a rain cover built in, so I don't worry about the weather.

    That seems to be another disadvantage of having super nice gear. I will comfort myself that I'll never have to worry about it like the rich folks do, hehehe.

    I'm glade to see that this thread didn't devolve into a pro/anti gun thread like the last one.
    Get insurance, be aware of your surroundings and don't be afraid to leave the DSLR behind in favor of a point and shoot if the situation calls for it.
    I don't think enyone has mentioned it in this thread but I've read that adding the camera to your home insurance can be dangerouse because they my jack up the price if you file a claim. Some have suggested getting your gear insured though someone else so if they up the price you can drop them and go with another company.

    I've always wondered about getting gear insured. I'm working up a pretty hefty lot of gear, and should probably work on getting it insured. I'd say, just from a rough guestimate, I probably have around $5500 in gear, and am about to add a $3-4k D800 (or equivalent, but more expensive D3s). Definitely a good thing to look into.

    Mark
    NIKON: D800 || D3200IR || 50mm F/1.8G || 80-200mm F/2.8D || 300mm F/4.0 AF-s
    SIGMA: 85mm F/1.4 || 180mm F/3.5 Macro
    TOKINA: 16-28mm F/2.8

    I'm not so worried about being robbed at home. Pretty secure where we are at. If I travel, I have areas behind walls where no one could find a thing unless they tear down the house. My concern is with traveling. But never thought about having guns to protect the photo gear.

    Just a note but be careful with homeowners insurance for camera gear. A rider on your homeowners might well cover you very cheaply, but remember that insurance companies don't actually like people who make claims and you don't have to make many to start seeing the annual costs rising and also risk being put on a blacklist (meaning very high costs and many insurance companies not even making offers).

    Separate insurance at least means you can make a claim without having to worry (as much) - plus you don't have to worry as much about the claim value - I know people who get riders on the homeowners and then when things do break if its under 1K in costs they don't use the insurance because its just too small an amount to risk the rise in costs to claim on.

    I checked with the ins co. They said I'd need a seperate policy for high $ camera gear. Esp since my ded is $6000 on the house. They said I can insure against 'all perils' for $1.40 per $100 of value...$112 per year for $8000 of gear.

    To those who suspect $5,000 in gear is a lot for a body and a few lens - that is erroneous.

    And State farm has my back whether its stolen off a beach chair or smashed on the train tracks =)

    Zero deductible CAMERA policy....and it was cheap!

    d*mn trains!
