This is like having friends who know what they're doing!
I wish I had a really good friend who was into photography a few steps ahead of me so I could go sit at the park with him/her and see just what to do when I get stuck. But I don't. So I'm here hoping maybe I can learn a few things, ask a few questions, and as I figure it out, maybe I can share my understanding with other people.
I have a Nikon D80 and have just used the kit lens till now (18-135mm). I just bought a 50mm f/1.8 that for the life of me, I can't figure out how to use correctly. I'm shooting my brother's wedding next month. Yes, I know that's not smart. So does he. But when you can only afford your sister and her cool-looking camera, you ask her to take pics for free. And apparently, she says yes. (Then she promptly realizes she must have lost her mind.

No longer a newbie, moving up!
Welcome
I've not been on here long, but have learnt a lot already.
Hopefully when you get past the post limit for including links, you can get some photos up.

Hi ... hey that's what forums are about.
You can always post here through your smartphone app when you are in the Park.
What the issue with the 50mm ?
Minolta Maxxum 9000/Sony Alpha SLT-A55/Ricoh Diacord/Voigtlander Bessa 46
The best photographs make it look like the "photography" is secondary.
... sometimes our responses may incite riots, but it's your decision to join the mob.

I think I finally figured it out about an hour after this post. I kept getting an error message on my camera every time I went any higher than f/22. The camera manual wasn't much help. I finally played with it long enough to realize I had to change the aperture setting from the camera, not the lens.
Then I felt very silly.
At least I can use it now! Any pointers on how to use it most effectively would be most appreciated, but trial and error is a wonderful instructor too.
Can anyone suggest which forums should I start with? I'm looking for some good information on learning to use the camera effectively and ideas for taking the kind of shots most necessary for a wedding.

Hahaha! Another sibling wedding photographer. My story is soon to come...but search Flickr and google image search wedding photos and make note of poses that you like and would work for your venue.
