By career - do you mean taking studio portraits in a make shift tent at Wal-mart or taking the scenic rout and traveling the world and taking Ansel Adams style photographs?
The first one can be done with a reasonably cheap setup and a bit more than basic understanding in lighting, as for the ladder after several decades of practice, failed attempts and successes, lots of $$ in equipment, and most of all a great understanding of photography.Scapes - land, city or whatever and B&W are my passion.

What have you done to lead you up to choosing this as a career? Are you starting fresh from square one with no formal education in the arts, or photography?

Oh good! Seriously, I am glad to see you have an arts background. That gets you one step ahead!

Glad to hear you have a regular income while it takes you a few years to get up to snuff and get yourself out there.
So, whatcha waitin' for? Start posting some pictures for critique! We can be tough though, so be prepared.
Lot's a good smart people here willing to help, and a few dicks too. I can be both.
Welcome aboard!

I'm nervous lol. I don't take critique too well and I put borders on my photos, then I found a whole thread about how evil borders are, now I'm thinking CRAP!

Hahaha! Just take it all with a grain of salt. It's mostly stuff to make you think, on the artistic side. The technical is a bit more definitive.
Borders are evil?
well I use nice thin black borders on mine. I don care.
I mean, pictures get framed, right?

I am pretty new too. I know how nervous you are to post,as was I. I still haven't posted a lot due to moving across the country with a 3yr old, just haven't had time. But i do make time to come here everyday. These people can be harsh but I've learned so much!! you just have to be willing to put yourself out there and try to take the critique for what it's worth. Also, if someone posts a link to a tutorial,OPEN IT!! I have found some fantastic info this way too. Can't wait to see what you come up with. Good luck!!
