    Hi All, Here to learn

Been away from photography for quite some time(film equipment was Canon AE-1 Program and Vivitar lenses)
Just received a Nikon d5100 kit for my birthday and trying to get back in the swing of things, took this a couple of days ago on our deck:
    Was in sport mode @300mm

I found out recently that these guys are HARD to capture in focus. It looks like you missed it here too just a bit. This is going to be even tougher at 300mm because you're DoF is quite small. I can't see your exif, but using a small aperture is going to help you.

The fill light is pretty weak in the first one, but it's a bit better in the second. Any chance you can set up a reflector or an off camera light? I won't spam your thread, but check out my last shot on my flickr (link in sig) for a hummer I got a couple weeks ago with a couple flashes off-camera in daylight.

    Welcome aboard.
There's no correlation between creativity and equipment ownership. None. Zilch. Nada. Actually, as the artist gets more into his thing, and as he gets more successful, his number of tools tends to go down. He knows what works for him. Expending mental energy on stuff wastes time.
