winter protection

Hi, so this is the first winter (more like lack of, we don't have snow in Wisconsin) that I have owned my DSLR. I am wondering what are some tips to keeping your camera/equipment save from snow/water. I read that putting the equipment into Ziploc bags will keep lenses/cameras from fogging up...
