I saw that post on Digg.com the other day. Pretty good idea in a pinch. But nothing beats a real tripod.

Tripod sockets are not designed for this. Too much pressure will rip it out of the camera. They're designed to have pressure in the normal direction.

Yes and no. There's plenty of tripods which give the option to mount the camera upside down, so the cameras handle some degree of reverse pressure. I agree it'll apply stress not normally accounted for, just don't yank too hard.
