Does Canon have a "longer" f/2.8 IS that is not EF-S? Am thinking something in 70 or 100 range.

24-70 f/2.8L is great, but no IS
24-105 f/4.0IS L is great, but is f/4.0

17-55 f/2.8IS is "EF-S", and price is now over $1K - for a non"L"?

Anyone who have used both the 24-70 and 24-105 comment/compare the f/2.8 with the "extra hand-hold ability" of the f/4.0IS? Today I use 17-40L with 580EXII which works, but probably nicer if I can do same without flash.

There is the 70-200 F2.8 L IS

Unfortunately, there is no 17-85 F2.8 IS or 24-105 F2.8 IS. There isn't even a 24-70 F2.8 with IS.

From all that I've heard...this lens is on par with L lenses, in terms of image quality. The build quality isn't quite to the level of some L lenses however...but it's still better than consumer level lenses.

It seems that Canon just won't give EF-S lenses the L designation...even if it's got top level optics.

The EF-S 17-55 f2,8 IS a bit pricey and it doesn't look that well built, but the optical quality is very nice and the AF is extremely quick and silent. This is my favourite lens that sits on my 30D most of the time. If its worth the money or not is up to everyone to decide but my guess is that this is probably the best allround lens that Canon can provide for non ff dslrs.
