I'm looking to replace my 18 - 55 mm lens and was wondering what lens you guys would recommend as a replacement. The only things I'm sure I want at this point are a zoom lens (no primes), f2.8 and around $300 - $400. I've been looking at the Sigma and Tamron 17 - 50's but I wanted to be sure I wasn't leaving anything out.

    Any suggestions or advice?

That Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4.5 is a next buy for me. I cant think of any other maker that has anything close. There are 28-70MM f/2.8's, but if you want a wide to telephoto, w/ macro capabilities - that Sigma's your lens.

Love my Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8, highly recommended as a replacement for the kit lens.

f/2.8 lenses for under $500 are going to be hard to find but you may see a few 3rd party ones for $400 if you're lucky.

The 17-70 isn't really a macro lens but does get 1:2.3 which is decent. I don't normally recommend variable aperture lenses as there can be times it's a pain but this lens does get good reviews.

Choice would be this or the Tamron 17-50 f2.8

LOL yeah of course the $1200 lens would be the best choice. However, for me and within the next month, $1200 isn't an option. Maybe further down the road but... for now it's not an option.
