20D and a flash

I have had my 20D for about 6 months now and I love everything about this camera. I do primarily outdoor work and candid shots. Recently I found myself at an indoor wedding as a guest and noticed that the hired photographer was missing some key moments so I pulled out my camera and did some shots as the wedding party was coming down the isle, reception photos, and so on. Upon looking at the photos I was dismayed at the distance the flash was hitting at.

Does anyone have a good suggestion for a flash for the digital. I was told that the flash had to be a special sort to work with the digital camera, but doing most of my work outside I wasnt really paying attention to the sales person during his sphele.

Almost any flash will work with a 20D, but if you want all the whiz-bang features you probably need a Canon flash. I have a Canon 550EX. It does a good job; it's the only flash I've tried with the 20D. I like the high speed flash sync feature a lot. I think the new version is the 580EX.

the canon flash guns - the 580 will work very well with 20D as it has features which work well for digital
colour temp adjustment
zoom to account for digital sensor
could not find the spec on canon site !!!!!!!! not keen on the changes they have made there
