wow....i was so gonna buy a zoom! would a prime wide angle be sharper than a zoom?
or are wide angles just sharp in general?
 
Prime would "always" be sharper than a zoom
Normal primes are the sharpest (around 50mm)
Good wide angles aren't easy to make for SLRs because you have a flipping mirror. It's easier to make a wide angle for a viewfinder.

But canon's FD wide angles are decent to excellent.
 
I bought a Sigma zoom 24-70mm instead of 28-80mm for my Nikon camera and haven't regretted it since. The 4mm makes a lot of difference when you want wider angles - and it shows.
