So i was on a movie set the other day shooting some stills for the production crew, using an Xti with a 430ex flash. about 3 times during the day after i had taken a shot the flash would randomly turn on, like a flashlight, basically flashing over 10 times in under a second, kinda like a over clocked strobe light. Is that some kind of phantom electrical problem or what? I cant replicate the problem, it just seems to happen sometimes.

I believe the flash does that to act as a modeling light. Apparently it's activated when you press the DOF button on the camera.

You can deactivate this feature with CF#5.

It might be the modeling light. The 580EX II that I own has a modeling light feature. If you hit the aperture preview button, it illuminates like described.

When I had an XT it seems like I used to hit the FEL button a lot that caused similar behavior. It's the asterick on the right side of the body (back).
