Hi Guys!

I'm very new to the whole photography thing and was hoping to buy a DSLR in the near future, but here's the dilemma.

For £450, i have been offered either a Canon EOS 450D with 18-55mm lens and 70-300mm lens (Both Canon lenses) or a Canon EOS 500D just with an 18-55mm lens.

In your expert opinions, which is the best deal? I'm thinking the 450D... but we'll see! Both are new btw :)

Thanks!

Ben.

Do you mean 75-300mm or 70-300mm IS lens? Because in the current Canon EF lens lineup, there are only 2 70-300mm lenes and they both cost similar or higher than the EOS 450D camera itself.

If indeed the lens you mentioned is indeed the 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM lens, and the place you plan to get the gears from is legit, I will take the 450D with the 2 lenses.

Ah oops, it's actually the 75-300mm lens, my mistake! What difference would that make to the situation?

I do not think I will buy the Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM. And that is just my personal opinion based of the optical performance of the lens. I will rather take the EF-S 55-250mm IS lens instead or other similar priced third party telephoto zoom lenses such as the one from Sigma.

If you really need video, then go with the 500D. If you want to save some money, I'd find a 450D without the EF 75-300mm lens (if it cost less).

Yeah, I tend to agree that the 75-300 isn't worth wasting your time with. If you're just starting out the 18-55 will get you going for a while anyway. I do think that the 500d is a significant improvement over the 450d, particularly with its high ISO ability and video capture. I would take the 500d deal. The 75-300mm lens isn't worth very much anyway.

i got the 500d and love it, but for the price i think i'd rather just spend a little more and get the 550d that just came out .. if only i would have waited a year :(

Well, just to let you all know, i went for the 500D! Roll on the photography now :)

Thanks for all your help!

Ben.
