You should still be able to manual focus and use the "Focus Indicator" (if that comes on the D40 - its a little dot in the lower left corner).

I have this lens on the d40x.

It is quite easy to master the manual focus are you having bother with it?

You won't be able to auto-focus with this lens on the D40. However, you will get all the other features of the lens functioning as normal. Plus you'll be able to use a focusing indicator to tell whether or not a photo is in focus. It's a green dot located near the AF-point selector in the camera's viewfinder.

It really isn't too hard to manual focus. I've even managed to get some crisp photos of my toddler while manually focusing and she never stops moving!

Yeah it doesn't take very long to get used to manually focusing. I was a little apprehensive about getting the 50 but now I am so pleased that I did.
