I like #2 better. I still shoot with a 50mm fixed and it is what I learned with (as have many) - in my view, a relatively restrictive point of view forcing the photographer to make more compositional decisions than the slightly wider (35mm) or slightly longer (75mm/85mm) lenses. In other words, not as easy to shoot with but the challenge will make the shooter develop good habits and skills. I see that you are enjoying the narrow DOF the 1.4 allows (smooth bokeh, by the way) - it would also allow for those flashless evening B&W street shots on fast film...
