70-200 f/2.8L IS questions

Is the tripod ring removable? I've unscrewed it and it just stops once loosened - can not seem to turn it anymore without "breaking".

The "zoom ring" - is it supposed to be smooth? Mine feels a bit tight.

I also have a 17-40 f/4L. The zoom ring feels much smoother, but then glass probably smaller so not sure if tightness is to prevent slippage or something.

Lens is new so wanted to take care of any possible problems.

It comes off...and yes, the zoom ring will probably be a bit tight. No worries. Is it smooth at least? It shouldn't be like....HARD to move...just snug.

What Sideburns said. Does your local camera store (assuming you purchased it there) have one on display? If so I would just take it in and just ask to test it out.

If it's brand new, you just haven't broken it in yet.
