Here are three versions of a recent picture I took at the beach. The subjects are two of my kids. Which looks best? I know I could have done better at composing it, but I loved the expression on their faces as they came closer.

I like the colored one most.

Even before I had read the other answers here, I too thought by myself: the coloured version is best.

Careful Cow she's only 14 and she's my daughter. Plus her three brothers are pretty protective of all of their sisters. And down here in the south good southern boys know how to hunt. :)

I agree with m_c on both points.

Yea, you could have centered it or zoomed out more. The girls board being cut off and then all the space to the right of the boy dont look rite. Or maybe if you croped the pic down some. I like the shallow DOF, though it could have been even more shallow.

By that question, I thought HogHunter was wondering about the 3 pictures rather than the comparison of the subjects.

    Cow you are sick! :D

I know she's beautiful. Unfortunately, she does too. When boys come around I make a big deal of making sure they know I shoot more than just my camera. Having five teenagers puts a serous strain on the nerves.

Id have to also say the colour one. As graig was saying a tighter crop in from the right would prolly even things up a little more. I just think the skin tones are perfect in the colour ones.

Haha, don't worry. I'm herbivorous remember?

but I've got 4 stomaches!!!! Muhahaha!!!
( In case you don't get it, I've got big appitite! :p )

Anyways, the way the sun is shining, also the black shirt that your boy is wearing all contributed to the attention that automatically draws the eye to your daughter. I think in terms of composition you could have put a bit more emphasis on her.

Maybe if your son had his shirt off it will be perfect~!
