Understanding Exposure - Bryan Peterson

Its the best one on the market. Easy to understand, nice photos, quite helpful. And always read your manual, as boring as they might be

[ame]http://www.amazon.com/Understanding-Exposure-Photographs-Digital-Updated/dp/0817463003/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1229179907&sr=8-1[/ame]

also if your a nikon user, [ame="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-url/ref=ntt_athr_dp_sr_1?%5Fencoding=UTF8&search-type=ss&index=books&field-author=David%20D.%20Busch"]David D. Busch[/ame] has a bunch of great books called "Digital Field Guide, and they are camera specific.. so if you have a d40, you get the Nikon D40 Digital Field Guide (etc) they are great books

The joy of photography is really good. i bought it from a used book store...amazon has a few too for really cheap. it helps you understand more of the beginnings of photography and most of the basics

The Photo Workshop books are pretty good. I've read the book on Exposure (Jeff Wignall) and I am now reading the book on Lighting (Chris Bucher).

The book that worked best for me is "Fundamentals of Photography" by Tom Ang. The best book for the subject. It covers everything that you need for photography.
