Right now I'm currently using a Nikon Coolpix P80, which is a less than desirable camera for what I am looking to take pictures of.

I race motorcycles, as well as all of my family. I want to be able to take clear action shot of motorcycles doing 20-130 MPH.

I've been looking at a Nikon D3000, and was wondering if that will be the right camera for what I need.

I can't spend over $500, I just need some feedback.

OH, Also: The Nikon D60 was the best camera near my price range but I was told that the D3000 has replaced it... is this also true?

thank you!

Most any DSLR camera will be fine for what you need. Good autofocus will be the most important thing, though as far as I know they are perform fairly similarly around the price you mentioned.

You'll need a decent telphoto lens, exact specs depending on how close you will be to the action. Depending again on budget, a 70-200/55-250/70-300 type lens will likely be ideal for you.

Look into a technique called panning, it will help you get good action shots even with a P&S camera, provided you can get close enough.

How about some still shots of the bikes you race?

Sort of.

Either way the D3000 has a better autofocus module than the D60 had.

There are used and refurbished D3000's on Amazon for about $400.
