A newbie with a lens question

I own a basic Canon EOS film SLR. I've been looking at Sigma's 28-200 lens as an all around use kinda lens. I'm on a tight college kid budget and this lens seems to fit the bill for my needs. If anyone has any input before a purchase, advise, personal rusults, or suggested alternatives(keep in mind I can't buy L-glass), please share with me your thoughts.
